In EUSD, all of our students are able to engage in authentic learning experiences that inspire them to see how their learning connects to the world around them. As we implement the EUSD Framework for the Future and as part of our science instruction, all EUSD 8th graders participate in a fieldwork experience called the Middle School MD program, offered in partnership with the Palomar Health Foundation. This program connects Palomar Health doctors, nurses, and ancillary staff with our students, inspiring a new generation of healthcare professionals through accessible, engaging, hands-on, and fun medical instruction. All 8th-grade students from Bear Valley, Del Dios, Hidden Valley, Rincon, and Mission Middle Schools, as well as from Quantum and Limitless Learning Academies, visit the Palomar Medical Center Escondido campus on one of eleven dates throughout the month of September.

During this Career Technical Education field trip experience, students step into the role of medical professionals, starting the trip by putting on an official Middle School M.D. lab coat. They participate in hands-on stations, practicing skills such as ultrasounds, intubation, casting and splinting, as well as learning how to administer CPR. Students are given the opportunity to tour a working lab where lab techs share their expertise in testing samples quickly and efficiently to serve the needs of patients from all over the county. This field work is connected to in-class learning, where students learn about how waves are a necessary part of imaging technology and help serve medical needs. By connecting classroom learning with real-world applications in healthcare, students are able to see themselves as medical professionals and leaders in the healthcare field.
